InvestigateWest, a 14-year-old nonprofit news organization, is looking for an investigative reporter to cover Indigenous affairs across the Pacific Northwest. This is a unique opportunity to probe topics important to tribal communities across the region and to hold the powerful to account. For the right candidate, this can be an incredible opportunity to make a huge difference! Bonus: You can work from home, enjoy a relatively flexible schedule and be part of a mission-driven organization that produces investigative journalism and measures success by real-world impact.

This job is full-time and includes benefits. Candidates must live or be willing to relocate to the Northwest, ideally Washington state.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has previous experience covering Indigenous affairs.
  • Has a track record of producing impactful in-depth or investigative stories.
  • Aspires to great storytelling and studies the giants of the craft.
  • Gets reluctant sources to talk candidly and has a deft touch with people who have experienced trauma.
  • Can work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Brings a little extra to the table (like data analysis, photography, video, crowdsourced reporting or community engagement skills).
  • Has a long list of project ideas and can juggle quick, mid-range and long-term investigations.

Location: Work from home anywhere in the Northwest, ideally in Washington state

Compensation: $48,000-$65,000

Benefits: 100% coverage of health insurance, 50% of dental, retirement contribution, a work computer and a monthly work-from-home stipend of $100.

Work schedule: Flexible, but generally 40 hours.

Deadline: Jan. 26, 2024, though we will begin reviewing applications immediately. We’ll continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our website.

How to apply: Please send us a resume and four writing samples using this form.

Contact: Email questions to hiring@invw.org. No phone calls, please.
