International Center for Journalists seeks a resident investigative journalism editor, Asia-Pacific region

ICFJ is looking to add to its global staff by hiring a Resident Investigative Journalism Editor to lead a five-year, multimillion-dollar program in Southeast Asia focused on building investigative journalism networks. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in investigative reporting, have worked extensively in the Asia-Pacific region and be an effective manager with experience leading editorial teams and complex, multi-year projects. 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee implementation of a five-year, regional investigative journalism program program in Southeast Asia.
    • Develop and implement the program work plan, timelines, and monitoring, evaluation and learning strategy.
    • Build the capacity of media professionals to undertake investigative journalism and endow them with security skills in potentially dangerous environments.
    • Train journalists to report collaboratively providing access to digital tools to do the work.
    • Work with journalists in the region to improve and expand coverage of in-depth stories while stimulating regional cross-border investigative reporting.
    • Train hundreds of journalists to produce investigations and develop cohesive networks among them.
    • Collaborate with MEL team to track impact of investigative stories
    • Build relationships with regional media outlets to develop investigative capacity
  • Help journalists use data and digital tools to identify money laundering and/or mismanagement of funds.
  • Oversee program budgets (monthly).
  • Manage staff/staff time.
    • Train ICFJ staff and local team members on program requirements (as detailed above: budget management, implementation of program activities, program communications, MEL strategies.
  • Write and/or edit monthly, quarterly, progress and/or final reports for funders
  • Responsible for grant compliance.
  • Work with the vice president, programs and DC-based programs team to improve program processes and management.
    • Help to identify new processes to improve workflow.
    • Implement new processes that improve workflow.
  • Represent ICFJ at investigative journalism and regional conferences, meetings and other events that raise the profile of the organization and build valuable connections that bolster the outcomes of the program.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of ten years experience as an investigative journalist, producing impactful stories and leading editorial teams
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in non-profit grant management, including federal grants, and/or relevant journalism role and coordinating non-profit program activities, generating reports, overseeing budget expenditures.
  • Strong program management experience
  • Extensive international experience, including a strong background working in the Asia- Pacific region with the ability to relocate to the region
  • Willingness to be ICFJ’s legal representative in the region
  • A strong understanding of monitoring, evaluation and learning
  • Demonstrated experience with databases and new digital technology
  • Demonstrated analytic, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Strong and proven organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with program monitoring and evaluation practices
  • Bachelor’s degree

Starting salary: Starting at $100,000
