Institutional Investor seeks a senior staff writer

Institutional Investor is looking for a motivated and talented Senior Staff Writer to join our team in New York and support the continued growth of the business. This individual must have demonstrated experience covering finance and be able to report and write news stories and feature articles. You will work with a talented team of editors and writers to report on the characters, firms, controversies, trends, issues, research, and general happenings within the world of institutional asset management and finance. You will write timely news stories as well as periodically pitch, write or edit long-form features. Impeccable editorial judgment, sharp news instincts and high standards for quality journalism are a must.

Responsibilities include:

  • Report institutional investing news accurately, fairly, and quickly.
  • Meet with sources to build relationships that will result in better reporting and writing.
  • Write clear and accurate news stories that are regularly published online.

Key Interfaces

  • Build relationships with sources and public relations firms.
  • Interview sources to develop and produce reporting.
  • Work with Institutional Investor editors to define, improve, and publish articles.
  • Keep editors informed of ongoing reporting projects and any source meetings.
  • Provide art directors necessary information for them to create art to accompany stories.

Qualifications

  • Reporting, news writing, editing, interviewing and source development skills are necessary for this role.
  • It is important to have the ability to understand and write about complex financial concepts in a clear and concise way.
  • Experience with content management systems, social media, and Excel a plus.
  • Five years newsroom experience covering finance

He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
