Insider Inc. seeks a special projects fellow (summer 2023)

Insider is hiring a Special Projects Fellow to join our Special Projects Team.

Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism company. At Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Role & Team:

The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

As a Special Projects Fellow you will support the Special Projects Team to produce several of Insider’s large- and small-scale series.

The Special Projects team is responsible for creating and executing complex editorial packages and events, collaborating with editors throughout the newsroom, and representing editorial interests across the brand. We value creativity, accountability, and diversity of ideas and opinions.

This role reports directly to Julia Hood. This role will be remote.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with the Special Projects Editors to ensure that all our projects are accurate and on time.
  • Manage projects involving the events, studios, and editorial teams.
  • Potential to write articles and descriptive materials around events and special series.
  • Coordinate promotion with our marketing and social media team.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great)
  • Familiarity with events and social media
  • Ability to work quickly, independently, and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun
  • Comfort or ability to learn to work with project management tools like Asana, Airtable, Basecamp, or similar programs.
  • Experience with managing complex projects and collaborating across multiple teams.
  • Confidence to connect with senior people internally and externally to secure necessary collateral like photos, bios, and other necessities.
  • Generating ideas for new editorial series and projects that will engage Insider’s diverse audience.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment

Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you’re interested in working on this team. If you’d like some tips, check out our best practices guide.

Are you passionate about this opportunity, but worried that you don’t have 100% of the experience we’re looking for? We still want to hear from you! Apply online and let us know why you would make a great addition to the Insider community.
