Ingram’s magazine in Kansas City, a 50-year-old business publication covering key economic sectors in the bistate region of Missouri and Kansas, seeks a senior leader to direct our editorial print production for the monthly magazine and collaborate with our digital staff producing daily newsletters and breaking news for the Web. We’re looking for a no-nonsense, focused, high-output self-starter who can multitask by:

  • Producing enterprise features that provide insights for a readership comprising business owners and executives, focused mainly on the economic pillars of construction/development, banking/financial services/ health care/insurance, K-20 education/work-force development, along with innovation, entrepreneurship and the emerging start-up culture in and around the Kansas City area.
  • Researching and compiling deep, insightful and granular tranches of data for use in infographics and other design elements.
  • Working with staff members to produce large sets of highly qualified candidates for the editorial programs that recognize exceptional performance and achievement at both the individual and organizational levels. Assist editorial leadership in candidate evaluations and selections, then coordinate photo delivery, write short profiles of honorees and work with production to produce accurate, polished editorial pages.
  • Working with digital staff to generate content for our news report at Ingrams.com and a series of five newsletters through the week. Must be proficient in WordPress to administer back-end Web processes.
  • Assisting our list/data research staff with public-source downloads tracking banks, credit unions, public-school SAT performance, labor-union membership, airline and airport traffic volumes, wealth-management firms, public-sector employers, public companies and more. MUST be highly skilled navigator of public-sector data portals and highly proficient in Excel.
  • Coordinating other features of each monthly issue, including roundup of significant news developments, recruiting C-suite executives and thought leaders, then working with them each month to produce one-page commentaries on small business finance, operations and legal affairs, as well as personal wealth management and estate planning.
  • Updating and maintaining data bases with contact information on C-Suite and other leadership of the largest companies (by sales volume), fastest-growing companies and leading employers in the metro area and statewide.

Other duties, including occasional marketing-content support, will be assigned as warranted.

This position requires an experienced journalist who can discern what constitutes self-serving promotional fluff from corporate PR units, as opposed to developments with unquestionable impact—positive or negative—on regional business conditions, public policy/taxation, quality-of-life and other factors. Kansas City is poised to build on its reputation as a national leader in multiple sectors, including logistics, health care, agribusiness, financial services and data-center construction/operations, all with significant implications for the region’s ability to attract and retain highly qualified people in high-paying, vital job sectors. Our mission at Ingram’s is to help the business community identify emerging opportunities and potential threats to that evolution, as well as to spotlight and we insist on candidates who live and breathe content related to that mission.

Applicants should be prepared to submit extensive examples of published/broadcast work relevant to those topics, as well as deep personality profiles and analysis pieces. Line editors and senior editors whose work has largely elevated the content of writers/reporters should be prepared to demonstrate how their contributions to finished, published work added vital depth/perspective and helped frame stories in the most appropriate light for readers.

To apply, send your resume, and cover letter and how you’d approach the job to msweeney@ingrams.com.
