Industry Dive seeks a reporter for CFO.com

As a reporter for the CFO team, you will be a critical part of a collaborative team of seasoned veterans covering the role of the chief finance officer.

In this role, you will make an immediate impact on our daily coverage. You will help us shape this coverage as you report on a wide range of topics, including the most critical challenges CFOs face today. As a part of your regular responsibilities, you will report and write daily stories as well as feature-length articles.

You will own your beat by cultivating relationships with our CFO and executive-level audience, as well as key stakeholders, consistently staying on top of important developments through a variety of resources. You will also pitch and report stories on a recurring basis.

You will also have some regular editing responsibilities to ensure CFO’s original reporting conforms to the highest journalistic standards.

This role is based in New York City or Washington, DC. Remote option may be considered.

This position reports to the Managing Director.

What You’ll Do

  • Report, write and edit stories that analyze the trends and issues that shape a finance executive’s decisions, including developments in capital and credit markets, technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, financial reporting, scenario planning, and managing talent.
  • Cultivate a beat, interview CFOs and newsmakers, develop relationships with key industry sources and experts, and chase down important stories in collaboration with the CFO team.
  • Write and help edit stories for style, clarity, tone, and relevance to CFO’s target audience.
  • Collaborate closely with other CFO editors to help ideate future story ideas, relevant trends, and impactful storytelling methods.

What You Can Bring To The Table

  • A proven track record of strong writing and reporting skills in a variety of storytelling formats.
  • Deep curiosity about corporate finance, macroeconomic forces, and C-suite leadership.
  • Familiarity with business journalism and ability to interpret business concepts to a highly sophisticated audience.
  • Aptitude for building source relationships to advance original reporting.
  • Experience pitching to and working collaboratively with an editorial team.
  • Familiarity with publishing newsletters.
  • Ability to write under deadline in a fast-paced news environment.
  • At least 3 years of experience in journalism with a preference for business-to-business (B2B) journalism.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
