Illinois paper seeks business reporter

The Pantagraph, an award-winning newspaper in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, is seeking an energetic self-starter to cover the business beat for our newspaper, website and monthly business magazine.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong storytelling skills
  • Ability to sift through jargon to make business issues interesting and relevant to readers
  • Ability to develop sources and story ideas
  • Ability to juggle daily and long-term assignments, meet deadlines and generate coverage quickly for our website and social media
  • Ability to look beyond the meeting or press release to find enterprises stories
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 1-2 years’ of newsroom experience
  • Business writing experience a plus, but not essential

Candidate must be willing to work a Tuesday through Saturday shift, with Saturdays as a general assignment reporter.

Bloomington-Normal is a growing, diverse economy, home to a Fortune 500 insurance company, an automotive manufacturer, a regional airport and an abundance of small businesses.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
