Idaho State Journal seeks a sports reporter

The Idaho State Journal is seeking a sports reporter to cover Idaho State University and high school sports. We are looking for a talented sports writer who can provide stories that connect with readers, from creative profiles and fun features to pieces that require more reporting and legwork. To do that, candidates will need to develop relationships with athletic directors, coaches and players to find stories and break news.

  • Proficiency in online journalism and knowing how to use social media are requirements of this position.
  • Video and photography skills are also important.
  • We use Blox CMS to write, edit and post stories, so any familiarity with that is a plus.
  • The position includes working with page designers on editing each day’s sports section
  • Page design skills are not required.
  • Sports reporting experience is preferred with this position, but mostly we want someone who’s enthusiastic about covering local sports and doing so in ways that reflect what readers care most about.

The Idaho State Journal is located in Pocatello, a city of 55,000 people in Southeast Idaho. We’re an outdoors mecca a few hours drive from Boise, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone National Park and Sun Valley. Skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, camping, hunting and fishing opportunities are abundant here.

To apply for our sports reporter position, please send a cover letter, resume and 3-5 writing clips to Editor Ian Fennell at editor@journalnet.com.
