The Houston Chronicle is seeking a bold, visionary business editor to own coverage of one of the most dynamic economies in the world. Houston is a global energy capital, home to one of the largest medical complexes, a thriving port and one of the fastest-growing real estate markets in the nation. Our next business editor will set the agenda for how we cover these industries and the powerful forces that drive them, delivering breaking news, sharp analysis, and investigative work that reveals how business shapes our city, our state, and the world.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team covering Houston’s largest business sectors — including energy, healthcare, aerospace, real estate, trade and services and emerging industries — with speed, depth, and authority.
- Edit and elevate breaking news, analysis, and investigative stories that connect local developments to national and global trends.
- Collaborate with other newsroom leaders to integrate business expertise into broader coverage.
- Use audience data and insights to guide coverage priorities and grow readership. It’s crucial that you understand how to translate technical business and financial news into accessible narratives for a general audience.
- Innovate in how we deliver business journalism — developing recurring programs, experimenting with new formats, and partnering with key voices and influencers to expand our reach and relevance beyond traditional articles or print.
We’re Looking For Someone Who
- Has at least 8 years of editing experience, preferably in business journalism, with a proven record of managing reporters and producing high-impact stories.
- The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge of one or more of Houston’s core business sectors mentioned above, and the curiosity to quickly master others.
- Thrives in a fast-paced newsroom, juggling breaking news and enterprise while upholding high editorial standards.
- Is a strong coach who can mentor and develop reporters’ skills while helping them build source networks.
- Understands how to make complex topics engaging, clear, and relevant for a wide audience.
- Is comfortable with public speaking and representing the Chronicle in Houston’s business community, building visibility and connections for the newsroom.
- Communicates openly and constructively with reporters, fostering a collaborative environment that prioritizes journalism.
Success is measured by
- High-profile business stories that drive readership, subscriptions and impact.
- Growth in the Chronicle’s authority and influence in covering Houston’s economy.
- Strong collaboration across the newsroom to enhance enterprise and breaking news with business context.
