Houston Business Journal seeks a data reporter

The Houston Business Journal seeks a Researcher/Data Reporter to compile the publication’s high-profile and consistently award-winning Lists. That includes researching and analyzing data collected from surveys, regulatory agencies and other sources to determine the trends affecting the Houston business community.

Our Lists rank the top Houston companies and are viewed as an invaluable tool to the business community. This person MUST have a meticulous eye for detail, be aggressive about finding data and must also have amazing customer service skills. Must be proficient in Excel and not be afraid of math.

Basically, I’m looking for the type of person who will adjust a slightly askew picture on a wall, even at someone else’s house.

To apply, please email a cover letter, resume and references to Editor-in-Chief Giselle Greenwood at ggreenwood@bizjournals.com.

Job summary:

• Complete roughly one to two Lists a week, including updating annual Lists as determined by the editorial calendar. Companies in the databases should be emailed surveys at least twice, with at least one follow-up contact by phone and email as required.

• Create or use surveys, public documents and other appropriate resources to compile Lists. Lists must be completed according to the deadline schedule, in general, three weeks prior to publication.

• Be the HBJ point person for any companywide data projects

• Serve as the public point of contact for research- and List-related questions or concerns.

• Generate at least four to eight cover stories annually based on business data, including reports on the largest public companies, executive compensation and others that are new or that the Business Journal publishes annually.

• Report breaking news on executive pay, executive changes or other breaking document-sourced news when the information is filed, as well as stories for print.

• Write stories that analyze business data and data-generated news, primarily about public companies and banks, to tell the reader what it means.

• Conceptualize at least five new List ideas each year and provide input each year on developing the next year’s editorial calendar (including timing of research projects based on when data is available).

• Organize and oversee weekly expanded List meetings with editors, reporters and the designer to discuss and plan upcoming projects and data-driven special sections.

• When appropriate, keep log of research actions, including when follow-up calls and contacts were made, in the appropriate database and entry.

• Assist reporters with research on stories on an as-needed basis including providing them with source suggestions, data-generated story ideas, but also could participating in research for stories and specific projects if requested.
