HousingWire seeks reporter in Dallas

HousingWire is the nation’s most influential source of news and information covering the multi-trillion dollar U.S. housing and mortgage market, and is read by millions of financial industry professionals each year.

Our mission is simple: move the markets we serve forward. An award-winning B2B publication with national reach, the HW media platform offers the mortgage and related services industry an integrated platform spanning print, digital and online events, directories and much more.

HousingWire is winning more media awards for journalism and design excellence than any other trade media publication in the mortgage industry during the past five years. Our people rock!

We are a company of smart, nimble, passionate people who are determined to help a wide range of professionals make sense of an industry undergoing immense change. We represent a rare combination of entrepreneurial drive and visceral mission. We move with speed, purpose, and imagination — often defining paths that others have yet to consider.

Position Summary:

Can you feel it? It’s the heartbeat of the U.S. housing economy — and HousingWire is the only national publication dedicated to covering this critical sector of the economy. If you have a passion for finance and business, and are enthusiastic about being part of a fast-paced, flexible group of reporters who thrive on financial news, then you need to consider joining our team.

We’re seeking an energetic, internet-savvy financial reporter to cover U.S. housing policy, financial markets and related industry topics. We need someone who can develop sources, cover breaking news, and write enterprise stories — even make data tell stories. We don’t have the largest newsroom, but we do strive to have the best.

So, can you display your basic financial journalistic skill sets?

Do you understand how money/debt operates in capitalism?

Do you understand the role of consumers in the economy?

*** But most importantly, do you think you have what it takes to keep up? If so, we’re waiting. ***

  2. May perform quick rewrites of press releases, as needed
  3. Covers breaking news when relevant
  4. Contributes feature content to HW Magazine on a regular basis
  5. Uncovers new story angles and builds strong sources in the mortgage finance industry

  7. May seek direction from Senior Financial Reporter and/or Digital Reporter, as needed
  8. Other duties as may be assigned, such as covering the celebrity real estate market. [That’s right, when Kim Kardashian puts her home up for sale, we may just ask you to write about it. After all, we are the nation’s largest B2B website covering housing and mortgage finance; it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.]

Requirements:

  1. BA/BS, preferably in English, Journalism, or Marketing
  2. 2+ years relevant experience, preferably as a journalist
  3. A digital citizen: a basic understanding of HTML, as well as an understanding of how to use social media (Twitter, etc.) to build a base and an audience
  4. Ability to deliver outstanding work under deadline pressure
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  6. Best-in-class organizational and follow-up skills
  7. Autonomous worker, a self-starter who can manage multiple projects at once
  8. Competitive nature, a driver who wants to be first with a story
  9. Creative thinker who can find new angles that others haven’t yet thought about
  10. Maintains professional newsroom decorum at all times
  11. Must work well with others and enjoy being part of a team
