Herald-Standard seeks reporters/freelance writers

Are you a compelling story teller with an interest in news, feature or entertainment writing?

The Herald-Standard, located in the Laurel Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania, wants to fill both on-site and remote roles in the newsroom, and is also looking for talented, reliable freelancer writers.

Based in Uniontown, about 1 hour south of Pittsburgh, the H-S works as part of a combined newsroom of reporters who write for two dailies and two weeklies. Our reporters are focused on hyper-local stories that let our readers know what’s going on the community. We also partner with our sister paper, the Observer-Reporter in Washington County, to publish the weekly entertainment magazine “Go!,” a one-stop place to find out what’s going on in the area.

Here’s what we’re looking for: Two full-time general assignment reporters, one focused on covering Fayette County (where the H-S is based) and the second focused on neighboring Greene County. The Fayette County reporter would be based in the Uniontown office, with occasional remote work opportunities. The Greene position is mainly remote, with the need to travel to the county on an as-needed basis for assignments.

Both positions require people who want to go out into the community and form connections, find and produce meaningful, compelling copy, and who thrive on accuracy in a fast-paced environment. Photo skills are a necessity (our reporters often take the shots that accompany their articles), as is the ability to hit a deadline.

The full-time roles are a 37.5-hour work week, and mainly Monday-Friday. Most shifts are during the day, though occasional evening or weekend work is included. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required for both roles.

For the right candidate, we would be willing to consider part-time work for either role.

A more free-flowing gig to your liking? The H-S is also accepting letters of interest from freelancers who enjoy entertainment or features-focused writing. Compensation is per-assignment, with a minimum of $50 per story. Those who live in the area also have the opportunity to receive additional compensation for taking photos to accompany assignments.

For all of the roles, prior experience writing for news publications, or a degree in journalism or a related field is required.
