Hartford Courant seeks insurance reporter

This position is responsible for covering the major news and happenings in the insurance industry throughout CT. Attention will be focused on the major insurers in Greater Hartford, including The Hartford, Travelers, Cigna, Aetna, and United Healthcare. Secondary beats as assigned by the business desk.

Actively engage in both the print and digital platforms, updating stories throughout the day and aggressively using social media to both inform and interact with readers.  Stay in front of the competition by mining sources, staying on top of what is happening  and monitoring  what competitors are up to.  A keen eye for story and a deft writing touch are critical.

Responsibilities:
  • Uncover and write great stories.
  • Maintain standards of journalistic excellence in terms if accuracy, fairness and timeliness.
  • Work with news managers to develop a daily digital plan, building a comprehensive online strategy that will meet audience demands and help establish communities of interest.
  • Help develop innovative online content related to stories in the news, including web chats, photo galleries, databases, etc.
  • Assign photos and video in a timely fashion.
  • Develop skills in photography and videography as needed

Qualifications:

  • College degree preferred
  • Some experience reporting/writing for online or print publication
  • Knowledge of content management systems.
  • Excellent writing, reporting and editing skills
  • Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter and other social media.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Ability to organize and follow through
  • Ability to maintain accuracy in a fast paced environment while managing multiple priorities
