Hartford Business Journal seeks a staff writer

Hartford Business Journal covers business news throughout Connecticut via its website, daily email newsletters and biweekly print publication. It is part of New England Business Media, a $7 million+ highly successful regional B2B publishing company that also owns the Worcester Business Journal and MaineBiz.

Job Description:

Hartford Business Journal, Greater Hartford’s leading business-to-business publication, is looking for a full-time staff writer.

The qualified candidate must be an experienced journalist with multimedia skills, and capable of coming up with engaging story ideas for our business audience, writing clean copy and working both independently and collaboratively.

Business journalism experience is a plus. This is not a remote position, although working from home a day or two a week is permissible. The new hire will report to HBJ’s new, modern office space in downtown Hartford.

The staff writer position will contribute to HBJ’s daily e-newsletter — writing breaking news stories — and our biweekly print newspaper, writing 2 to 3 more in-depth stories and features.

The right hire must be enterprising, willing to juggle various responsibilities at one time, able to write both breaking news and longer-form stories and be a self-starter when it comes to generating story ideas and sources.

Just as important, you must be willing and able to meet with the region’s top business leaders.

Specific industry beats will be assigned; focus areas will likely include health care, bioscience, legislative topics, among other areas.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 to 5 years experience in journalism
  • A business journalism background a plus
  • Ability to see the big picture, strategize and solve problems
  • Clean and concise writer
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • The desire to work in a fast-paced, collaborative and creative working environment
