Grid seeks a reporter

March 29, 2023

Grid believes that the best journalism requires collaboration across traditional beat lines and across newsroom departments. Since our recent launch, we’ve demonstrated the power of this idea, particularly in the development of our signature format, the 360. This format unpacks the big story through lenses, from geopolitics to economics and even misinformation. The goal is to give the Grid audience a deeper understanding of the fundamental question or questions that animate the story.

The approach works across topics, whether it’s the war in Ukraine or the global antiquities trade.

This Reporter will take the ethos of Grid and the multiple-lens approach and translate that into sharp, daily pieces on national news that tackle angles we’re not seeing elsewhere. That could mean covering the talker of the day on the internet and in the media (Ticketmaster and Taylor Swift) or the talker in our newsroom (how do we define a famine?).

The reporter needs to be ready to get creative, testing how to apply lenses to these stories quickly and accurately. They need to be willing to go beyond text, working with the visuals, data, engagement, video and audio teams. The reporter also needs to be flexible – able to pivot when something isn’t working.

Grid is still in its infancy. This reporter will be part of a team playing a key role in shaping our daily editorial approach and in building our collaborative culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce on average 3-4 stories a week for the site – sometimes on your own but often collaborating with other reporters and editors
  • Build strong relationships with editors and reporters across the newsroom
  • Test new formats, including in text, audio and visual
  • Pivot when formats don’t work; experiment further with those that do

Requirements:

  • Ability to gather and verify information quickly
  • Willing to work with other reporters and editors and happy to share a byline
  • Strong writing skills with an ability to shift voice, tone, style
  • Demonstrated ability to write and report swiftly and accurately on tight deadlines
  • Track record of experimentation with new formats in digital media
  • Track record of working well with others
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Editor is in Washington, D.C., and office space is available. Remote work will be considered for those located on the East Coast or in the Midwest.
  • Working East Coast hours is absolutely required.

According to Indeed salary range is $46,000 to $95,000 per year
