Grid believes that the best journalism requires collaboration across traditional beat lines and across newsroom departments. Since our recent launch, we’ve demonstrated the power of this idea, particularly in the development of our signature format, the 360. This format unpacks the big story through lenses, from geopolitics to economics and even misinformation. The goal is to give the Grid audience a deeper understanding of the fundamental question or questions that animate the story.
The approach works across topics, whether it’s the war in Ukraine or the global antiquities trade.
This Reporter will take the ethos of Grid and the multiple-lens approach and translate that into sharp, daily pieces on national news that tackle angles we’re not seeing elsewhere. That could mean covering the talker of the day on the internet and in the media (Ticketmaster and Taylor Swift) or the talker in our newsroom (how do we define a famine?).
The reporter needs to be ready to get creative, testing how to apply lenses to these stories quickly and accurately. They need to be willing to go beyond text, working with the visuals, data, engagement, video and audio teams. The reporter also needs to be flexible – able to pivot when something isn’t working.
