The Greenville News in Upstate South Carolina, part of the USA TODAY Network, a top global digital media company, which reaches more than 100 million people monthly through a powerful network of mobile & publishing properties is looking for a full-time business journalist to report on the boom of economic development and new businesses in our community, as well as news coming from our largest business sectors, including automotive, aerospace and advanced materials.

Greenville is known as a regional economic powerhouse and a driver of manufacturing in South Carolina. Home to companies such as BMW, GE, Michelin and Bosch, Greenville is a hotbed of innovation attractive to a diverse group of foreign companies.

The perfect candidate for this position can regularly break exclusive business news by plumbing an extensive well of sources, taking a deep dive into public records and outhustling the competition. They can balance the daily drumbeat of business coverage with regular long-ball, dot-connecting journalism that explores issues facing businesses from large to small and the public policy that impacts them. The Business Reporter much be as comfortable interviewing CEOs as they are mid-level managers and the workers on the assembly line.

Business coverage in our market is highly competitive, and it’s incumbent on our business team to write authoritatively and credibly and ways that differentiate our coverage. That includes watchdog journalism that holds leaders accountable and exposes wrongdoing.

While we’re looking for excellent reporters and writers, your ability to handle a camera in a pinch is a plus — we admire versatility. A weekly column on business developments may be a part of this beat, so send clips that show your varied tone.

Reporters in our newsroom continuously grow a fan base by informing and engaging readers. They act as public ambassadors through community outreach and connect with readers through social media. They provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues. They produce watchdog journalism that leads to change. They use our content coaches and audience analytics to shape storytelling that meets audience needs and interests on every platform. And they contribute to the community’s greater good through impactful journalism.

South Carolina’s Upstate is a beautiful, active region that boasts an amazing quality of life. The Blue Ridge Mountains provide opportunities for great mountain biking and stellar scenery. The metropolitan area is home to 800,000 and sits midway between Atlanta and Charlotte, each a day trip away. Greenville is a forward-facing community with a vibrant downtown — you won’t find a better backdrop from which to accomplish your goal of reinventing journalism.
