Georges Media Group seeks a state education reporter

Georges Media Group, the largest media organization in Louisiana, seeks a state K-12 education reporter for its brands The Advocate, The Times-Picayune, The Acadiana Advocate and the Shreveport-Bossier Advocate.

In this role, you’d cover Louisiana education policies and how they impact students, educators and families over the short and long run. You’d cover the politics of our state’s education system, everything from state school board elections to ideological differences — and campaign financing wars — between state teachers’ unions and Louisiana’s business community.

You would cultivate relationships with educators, business leaders, parents, and policy makers to develop a deep understanding of education trends within our coverage areas.

In short, you’d be expected to report from both the boardroom and the classroom.

You should be a team player and have a history of breaking news and developing complex enterprise. You should also be comfortable with alternate forms of storytelling that engage readers, such as digital-only content.

Georges Media Group is fiercely committed to our mission: to create impactful journalism that is indispensable to readers and advertisers. Our local news coverage, produced in four distinct markets, aims to hold the powerful accountable, unite our communities, and celebrate Louisiana.

This position offers a competitive salary and benefits package that includes medical, vision and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability, and a 401K plan.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience as a reporter, with a strong preference for candidates with prior education reporting experience.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong research and investigative abilities.
  • Comfortable working independently and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • A genuine passion for education reporting and a commitment to informing the community about critical education issues.
  • Willingness to travel and visit schools within our coverage areas.
