GeekWire seeks cloud reporter

GeekWire is seeking a new staff reporter, focusing on cloud computing, enterprise software, DevOps and other nitty-gritty technologies transforming business and ushering in a new era of computing.

This job is an opportunity to break news and dig up insights on some of the biggest players in cloud technology: Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Salesforce.com, Google Cloud Platform, Docker, GitHub and many more. The reporter hired in this position will help to lead a new Cloud Tech channel on GeekWire as part of an important expansion of our coverage.

GeekWire is a fast-growing, national tech news site with strong roots in the Seattle region and a large audience of loyal, tech-savvy readers around the globe, who follow the site for breaking news, expert analysis and unique insights into the technology industry. GeekWire is uniquely positioned to cover some of the most widely followed and innovative tech companies in the world, and one of the most vibrant startup markets in the country.

Journalists who succeed at GeekWire get an adrenaline rush from a good scoop. They’re deeply curious about technology and business. They can juggle multiple assignments at once, including a mix of breaking news and in-depth stories. And they love figuring out mysteries, talking with sources and digging into public records.

In this position, you would welcome the opportunity to dive deep into technical subjects. You wouldn’t be frightened to spin up a new virtual machine in Azure or give a new SDK a try. Reporting from a conference like Microsoft Build, Google I/O, Salesforce Dreamforce or Facebook’s F8 would be your dream assignment.

You should be able to take an announcement about a new API and write a compelling story that is readable by business-minded readers while still being credible with the techies who use these technologies every day. You should also have the ability to spot broader trends and identify competitive angles between the big technology providers when they make technical announcements about their platforms.

Success in this role means that a broad swath of software developers and IT professionals around the world will read your coverage every day.

HIGH-LEVEL GOALS

  • Contribute a new editorial voice and fresh perspective to GeekWire on one of the most important beats in technology, breaking news in the cloud computing, developer tools and enterprise software sector, while at the same time providing context through larger, in-depth stories.
  • Increase GeekWire’s visibility in the cloud arena by attending and reporting from tech community gatherings and news events.
  • Work with GeekWire’s editors and other reporters on breaking news and the big stories on the beat, adding depth to existing coverage.
  • Assist with social media to help deepen GeekWire’s engagement across the community.
  • Assist GeekWire’s editors in putting together a day-long GeekWire Cloud Summit, coordinating speakers and activities, establishing GeekWire’s credibility in the field.
  • Bring your own personality and creativity to our news team, looking for innovative and new ways to report the news and engage with the community, establishing credible and top-notch coverage on the beat. The ideal candidate will have a strong nose for news, and a knack for explaining complex technologies in clear terms.
  • One of GeekWire’s biggest assets is our ability to be nimble and move quickly to implement and roll out new features, and many of the best ideas come from reporters and other members of the staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Content: Approximately 2-4 posts per day, on average, ranging from quick hits to in-depth stories. This will vary widely, depending on the day.

Social media: Contribute to Facebook and Twitter strategy, recommend additional channels, and help to execute on a daily basis. Potentially contribute to or host GeekWire podcasts, radio segments, and future video projects.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of three years of daily journalism experience and beat reporting, with basic knowledge of journalistic style and business financials. A solid grasp of technology and cloud computing is key.

EXPECTATIONS

The position is full-time, and affords some flexibility of working remotely, with a variable schedule, sometimes starting early in the morning for a breaking story, others running later into the evening covering or attending an event. Benefits included. Preferred location: Seattle.

Apply for this position by emailing social@geekwire.com.
