Gazetteer San Francisco seeks a managing editor

Publish high-quality and impactful journalism that drives subscriptions and buzz for Gazetteer San Francisco, a soon-to-launch local news website.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and edit the output of a team of local news reporters writing stories about San Francisco.
  • Aim to ensure we are publishing exclusive, must-read news that makes an impact, creates buzz, and drives subscriptions.
  • Devise and implement overall editorial strategy. What type of stories should we do? How many per day or per week? What mixture of subjects? What is our voice?
  • Hands-on management of daily news decision-making. The final decider on what stories we run and why. Approve stories from staff and commission stories from freelancers.
  • Manage and implement editorial systems and workflows.
  • Edit homepage ensuring freshness and aiming to restore the homepage as a destination.
  • Act as editorial head of HR, being a first point of contact for editorial staff coordination. Handle all hiring (and termination) editorial staff to maximize performance and achieve goals.
  • Create editor’s guide and style manual.
  • Promote journalistic best practices and ethics.
  • Manage monthly freelance budgets and expenses for each city, working with respective editors.
  • Act as lead editorial representative from company to outside media and the wider city.
  • Aim to speak at conferences, appear on television, write stories, and offer commentary to promote company.
  • Lead editorial coordination with the tech team. Work with editors to distill and offer feedback on design and function of the website from an editorial perspective.
  • Occasionally coordinate marketing team on strategy and execution of campaigns to drive subscriptions.

Requirements:

  • At least 7 years of experience in fast-paced and deadline-driven written journalism, with at least 3 years of experience managing a team.
  • Excellent writing, reporting, and editing skills.
  • Great wit and a strong voice.
  • Outstanding news judgment and journalistic ethics.
  • Leadership and communication skills, with the ability to drive and inspire a team to do great work.
  • A passion for San Francisco local news and shedding light on the untold stories that matter in this great city.
  • Creativity and differentiation, with the ability to ideate and produce stories that stand out.
  • Extensive digital publishing skills and experience, especially with an assortment of CMS and newsletter platforms.
