The Wall Street Journal seeks an experienced journalist to be Washington Coverage Chief.

The Washington Coverage Chief leads our reporting and editing teams in the nation’s capital and is the steward of our coverage of American politics, policy, national security, defense and economics.

The Journal has a storied tradition of excellence in Washington, and to succeed in this role you’ll need to carry on those ambitions and adapt them creatively for our changing audiences in a digital world. We’ll ask the new coverage chief to think innovatively about new formats and new approaches—especially around the 2024 presidential election.

Considerable editing and management experience is required.

You will:

  • Develop and implement a strategy for the bureau that will establish the Journal as the news leader for American politics, policy, national security, defense and economics.
  • Oversee the daily news flow and execute wide-aperture coverage of the presidential campaign and election.
  • Manage coverage of Congress, the administration and its vast portfolio of policy—foreign relations, defense, trade, the economy, the environment, immigration and much more.
  • Build and maintain a top-flight team of reporters and editors.
  • Collaborate with other coverage chiefs and with colleagues throughout the organization to produce great and distinctive journalism.
  • Seek new ways of doing our journalism digitally, and champion them in the newsroom.
  • Represent the Journal publicly.

You have:

  • Several years of experience managing journalists.
  • Demonstrated success at managing news coverage and managing longer-term work.
  • Ability to handle complex and sensitive coverage.
  • The very highest standards of excellence, and a commitment to ambitious and distinctive journalism.
