The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced, creative journalist to lead our coverage of how artificial intelligence is reshaping business in the tech industry and beyond.

You will guide a group of talented reporters writing about the most important companies and individuals in the AI boom, and about who is driving this technology, who is succeeding and who is falling behind. We’re looking for an independent thinker and a team player, with a track record of delivering high-impact journalism on complicated subjects in a way that resonates with a broad audience.

This is an opportunity to play a vital role in the Journal’s San Francisco-based technology bureau at the center of what may be one of the most consequential technological changes of our time, and is certainly one of the most expensive.

You are someone who can help reporters thrive on a fast-paced, intense subject area and deliver the full range of journalism that readers need: exclusive news, incisive analysis, and the deeply reported and distinctive stories that illuminate how these companies and their leaders operate. We are looking for either an editor with a proven track record of successfully driving coverage, or a seasoned reporter ready to make the transition to editing. Experience covering AI or other aspects of tech is a plus. More important is curiosity about the subject matter and capacity to learn it, as well as facility with business and finance news.

You will:

  • Support, guide, and inspire your reporters to deliver scoops of fact and observation in a highly competitive subject area involving some of the most-talked about companies in the world.
  • Work with reporters to identify the most interesting themes and players in AI and turn tips and hunches about them into smartly conceived and expertly reported stories.
  • Think creatively about how to tackle reporting challenges and engage audiences.
  • Work well with other editors in the bureau on a subject that involves many parts of the newsroom.
  • Experiment with a wide array of reporting formats, from visuals to podcasts and video.
  • Edit stories quickly, effectively and clearly, ensuring that they are compelling and adhere to WSJ standards.

You have:

  • Experience with sourcing and the ability to help reporters cultivate the networks they need to be effective.
  • Demonstrated acumen in conceiving and delivering sharp, revealing, agenda-setting stories on important issues.
  • Keen news judgment that keeps us ahead of the pack.
  • Elite-level communication and organization skills and excellent writing ability.
  • The combination of ambition and empathy that will inspire reporters to get the best out of themselves while managing the pressures of high-profile beats.
  • A collegial approach to coordinating coverage and facilitating mutual help among reporters and editors.
  • A curiosity about tech and the ability bring both business smarts and cultural acumen to the coverage.

The position is based in San Francisco and will report to the Journal’s global tech editor. If you’re interested please submit a resume, cover letter and work samples.
