The Wall Street Journal is seeking a deputy bureau chief to help shape and shepherd our legal coverage.
You’ll lead reporters as they develop must-read stories about the most consequential legal issues in the country, bringing law dramas to life to reveal both the people and the powers at stake. You’ll work closely with some of the Wall Street Journal’s top reporters in both Washington and New York, helping them conceptualize big impactful stories and elevate breaking news with unique angles. This editor can work on stories one day that are groundbreaking and have the world’s attention, only to pivot the following day to something that is more fun and whimsical. The legal beat has a never-ending supply of dramas, and we want to elevate them to the highest level.
The ideal candidate is equally comfortable handling breaking news, editing ambitious long-form features and coaching reporters to produce their best work.
You have:
- Impeccable judgment and the ability to exercise it under intense deadline pressure.
- Sharp writing and editing skills alongside a deep appreciation for the craft of reporting.
- A keen sense of the Journal’s audience – both present and future – and a demonstrated ability to help reporters craft appealing features.
- A track record of capably handling breaking news on deadline.
- A strong desire to work across coverage areas to produce top-notch journalism.
Requirements:
- 4 to 7 years experience running coverage of a relevant topic. Experienced reporters also are encouraged to apply.
- An aptitude and willingness to use digital-publishing tools to produce engaging journalism across the Journal’s publishing platforms.
- A deep understanding of the ins and outs of the U.S. legal system and the inner workings of the Supreme Court, the Justice Department and the judicial branch more broadly.
This position is based in New York or Washington.
