WSJ seeks a data journalist in London

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a highly motivated and experienced data journalist to join our team in London. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of data analysis and storytelling, as well as the ability to write clear and engaging stories that will inform and engage our readers.

In this role, you will be responsible for producing original works of data journalism, working closely with colleagues in different departments to uncover and develop compelling stories that tell a story about the world using data. You will be adept at utilizing advanced techniques to find and parse datasets, and transforming complex data points into engaging and enterprising narratives that captivate our readers.

You will also be responsible for contributing to the daily news cycle, and for breaking news as it happens, consistently delivering stories at a regular cadence and to a high standard that aligns with the reputation of The Wall Street Journal.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of success in data journalism. You should have a strong foundation in statistics and data analysis, as well as a deep understanding of the journalistic principles of newsgathering and storytelling. You should also be able to work independently and as part of a team, as well as actively contributing to setting and upholding standards for the use of data in our journalism

You will:

  • Produce original works of data journalism, including but not limited to:
  • News stories based on original data analysis
  • Data-driven features and explainers
  • Data-driven investigations
  • Work closely with colleagues in different departments to gather and analyze data, and to develop compelling stories with a regular cadence
  • Serve as the lead author and project manager on specific big quantitative stories
  • Contribute to the daily news cycle, and participate in breaking news as it happens
  • Maintain and communicate a strong understanding of the latest news and trends in data journalism
  • Uphold the highest standards of journalistic ethics and accuracy

You have:

  • At least 12+ years of experience in data journalism, computer-assisted reporting, or a related field at a news media business
  • Expertise in statistics and data analysis. Experience with programming languages (such as Python, JavaScript, or R) is a benefit
  • Deep understanding of the journalistic principles of newsgathering and storytelling including journalistic ethics, standards and practices
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously

The position is based in London and will report to the Director of Data Journalism.
