WSJ seeks a beverage and tobacco reporter

The Wall Street Journal is hiring a reporter to cover the beverages and tobacco industries.

This is a corporate beat covering some of the biggest global companies, from the brewer of Budweiser to Coca-Cola as well as the makers of Marlboros and next-gen vaping devices.

It is a unique perch from which we should be breaking big business scoops and uncovering revelatory stories about consumer behaviors, inflation, regulation, public health and social issues.

This reporter will work alongside others on the corporate team covering business leaders, retailers, big brands and consumer habits to set the agenda for executives, investors and shoppers.

We’re looking for someone with experience in business and financial journalism, a demonstrated ability to take readers inside executive suites and who is well versed in finding and telling human stories. This reporter is comfortable on video and audio, and loves to experiment with data, visuals and storytelling formats. A desire to collaborate with colleagues in other coverage areas is a must.

The position is based in New York and reports to the NY Corporate Bureau Chief.

You will:

  • Develop sources and break news on your beat so you become the go-to-source of insights for audiences on your beat
  • Conceptualize and deliver deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories, videos and podcasts.
  • Work with colleagues around the country and the world in a global newsroom.

You have:

  • Ideally at least three years of reporting experience
  • A track record of dominating a highly competitive beat
  • Deadline skills to report and write clearly under pressure
  • Proven ability to develop sources and write with authority on what is happening and what it means
  • A track record of tackling ambitious projects, finding original approaches to coverage and working with visuals to find creative storytelling techniques

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter detailing how you would do the job, and five examples of your best work.
