Washington Post seeks a business breaking news reporter

July 14, 2024

Posted by Chris Roush

The Washington Post is seeking a nimble, resourceful and energetic reporter to cover the latest developments in the economy, technology and corporate America.

The Business Breaking News team plays a key role in covering the biggest financial stories of the day, from major developments on Wall Street to trends in consumer behavior and American culture. The team produces a wide array of stories, from spot news and quick turn features to FAQs and rich visual stories. Ambitious reporters with good ideas can also pursue enterprise assignments that deeply explore – and hopefully break news on – major issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and swiftly respond to breaking news with strong, sustained reporting and writing that shows a commitment to fairness and accuracy.
  • Report across a range of business, economic and technology subjects, from financial markets and consumer trends to AI and corporate news.
  • Work collaboratively with reporters and editors on the Business desk and across the newsroom, including data and visual journalists.
  • Be available to work a variable schedule that can include some early morning or evening shifts.

Qualifications:

  • 1 to 3 years’ experience reporting for a daily news organization.
  • Experience covering financial news – or a strong interest in the subject – as well as an instinct for stories that engage readers and provide utility.
  • A talent for speedy reporting and clear writing, as well as a fanatical devotion to fact-checking and accuracy.
  • A collaborative spirit and a desire to experiment with alternative story formats that use graphics and other visual elements – plus video and audio – to make complex issues accessible to a broad audience.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

Interested candidates should upload a cover letter, résumé and three clips saved as pdfs to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by July 19 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Managing Editor Scott Vance, Business Editor Lori Montgomery, Deputy Business Editor Sandhya Somashekhar and Business Breaking News Editor Robbie Olivas DiMesio.
