Full-Time

The Messenger seeks a retail editor

The Messenger is looking for an experienced editor to run its coverage of retailers, restaurants, food manufacturers, and other consumable goods makers, including tobacco, alcohol, and the emerging marijuana and psychedelics industries.

The ideal candidate will instinctively understand consumer behavior, be able to spot trends in retail strategies/pricing and have the editing experience to train young reporters while inspiring experienced journalists to cut through the clutter of company embargoes, press releases, and SEC filings and find the most important news of the day.

The ideal candidate will have spent at least a decade covering or editing retail, food, or other related industries, have ample experience writing or editing earnings news at a real-time or digital news outlet and will have a proven track record of breaking news, working with anonymous sources, writing or editing long-form features, and delivering high-quality, high-impact journalism. They will know who the biggest players are in the industry and how to help both young and seasoned reporters develop sources and get scoops. They will be equally adept at editing breaking news as well as longer enterprise stories.

Duties include:

  • Assigning and editing engaging, accurate, informative, and swiftly delivered news stories in a sometimes high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Writing headlines with an eye toward SEO
  • Cutting through the spin in company press releases
  • Finding news in SEC filings and court documents
  • Developing high-impact story ideas and working closely with reporters/writers to execute them
  • Guiding the team in spotting the latest trends in retail, food, and restaurants, consumer spending, and sentiment, including the increasing use of AI in online shopping
  • Helping reporters cut through the spin of company press releases and SEC filings
  • Working closely with editors across teams and departments to get ahead of the news and creatively expand on existing stories
  • Building a cohesive team that you guide and educate with compassion, fairness, and equality
  • Improving every piece of copy that you touch
  • Collaborating with other departments, such as data, photo and social media, to ensure that all content is visually appealing, user-friendly, and optimized for SEO and different platforms
  • Keeping a meticulous editorial calendar

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience covering or editing business, earnings, or retail news
  • Proven track record of breaking news and filing or editing stories in a fast-paced, real-time news environment.
  • Reporting, writing, or editing investigative stories and/or long-form features.
  • A collaborative demeanor with experience working and coordinating with multiple teams and across multiple platforms such as social media and digital video.
  • The ability to deliver accurate news in a high-volume, deadline-oriented environment.
  • The willingness to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, and/or weekends as news breaks.
  • Be highly motivated, extremely organized, detail-oriented, and possess outstanding communication and coordination skills.
  • The job will be based in New York, NY with a hybrid in-office schedule.

Desired Characteristics:

  • BA or college-level equivalent.
  • Experience at a major online news site, daily financial publication, or a large daily newspaper.
  • Passionate for digital storytelling and creating the best reader experience online.
