The Messenger is looking for an experienced editor to run the Breaking News team for the Business section and to help set the standards for our earnings coverage.

The ideal candidate will be a speed demon, a news hound, an earnings expert and will be able to equip a young team of reporters with the tools necessary to cover live news as it breaks. We are looking to build a team adept at filing fast, accurate headlines on sometimes market-moving news – often building stories out a sentence or two at a time. This editor will lead a team of reporters and at least one other editor on some of the biggest stories of the day, will help other teams decide which earnings are important enough to cover, which stories are big enough to curate, and will coordinate across teams on which stories need to be handed off to beat reporters to be built out more fully.

They will be able to guide reporters in the art of combing through company press releases, SEC filings, and court documents to see beyond the spin and find the news. They will have intimate knowledge of the markets, economics, and covering company earnings. They will have at least 10 years of experience at a real-time news outlet delivering high-quality, high-impact journalism.

Duties include:

  • Monitoring breaking news tools and wires for the stories that matter the most to our readers
  • Assigning and editing engaging, accurate and swiftly delivered business news in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Writing headlines with an eye toward SEO
  • Cutting through the spin in company press releases
  • Finding news in SEC filings and court documents
  • Developing high-impact story ideas and working closely with reporters/writers to execute them
  • Working closely with editors across teams and departments to get ahead of the news, creatively expand on existing stories
  • Maintaining a detailed and forward-looking editorial calendar
  • Running a cohesive team with compassion, fairness, and equality
  • Improving every piece of copy that you touch
  • Collaborating with other departments, such as design and development, to ensure that all content is visually appealing, user-friendly, and optimized for SEO, social media, and different platforms

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience covering or editing news at a real-time national news outlet
  • Proven track record of filing or editing business news in a fast-paced, real-time news environment
  • A clear understanding of AP style and grammar
  • A collaborative demeanor with experience working and coordinating with multiple teams and across multiple platforms, like social media or digital video
  • Ability to deliver accurate news in a high-volume, deadline-oriented environment
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, and/or weekends as news breaks
  • A high level of motivation, organization and outstanding communication skills
  • The job will be based in New York, NY with a hybrid in-office schedule

Desired Characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Experience at a major online news site, daily financial publication or large daily newspaper
  • Passionate about digital storytelling and creating the best reader experience online
  • Solid understanding of web standards and SEO
