About the role:
This reporter will cover the federal government and Parliament, pursuing the stories that matter to Canada’s business and tech communities. Innovation and industrial policy will be the heart of the job, but it will include other business and economic issues.
The successful candidate will have a track record of producing high-quality journalism, and recent experience covering Parliament Hill. They will have an interest in business, economics and fiscal policy. They will be fascinated by how policies are crafted and decisions are made at the highest levels of government, but will always be focused on the impact on people’s everyday lives.
This candidate will excel at developing sources and will not hesitate to push for answers. They will be adept at finding stories in public filings, data sets and access-to-information returns. They will be an excellent writer who takes as much pride in contributing to our daily newsletter as they do in writing news stories and features. They will be an active partner in The Logic’s virtual and in-person live journalism events. And they will be committed to building a collegial, collaborative newsroom that treats all its members with respect.
This is a full-time staff job. This position is based in Ottawa, where The Logic offers a hybrid work arrangement.

What you’ll do:
- Generate unique story ideas and break exclusive news on policy and politics as they relate to business, technology and the economy
- Write in-depth analysis and longform features on key issues, decision-makers and events
- Cultivate sources and maintain contacts, find news in public documents and disclosures and file access-to-information requests
- Cover parliamentary and committee proceedings as needed, anticipating those of interest to The Logic‘s readers
- Participate in team coverage of budgets and economic statements
- Contribute writing and reporting for The Logic Briefing newsletter and other editorial products
- Participate in The Logic’s virtual and in-person live journalism events
- You have a passion for great journalism and a track record of producing it
- You have experience reporting news and features about politics and public policy, and an interest in writing about about their impact on business and innovation
- You’re comfortable reporting and writing in a range of styles and formats, while promoting diversity of thought and representation in storytelling
- You file clean copy on deadline
- You’re organized, focused and able to work both independently and collaboratively
- You have an adaptive and entrepreneurial mindset
- You’re a team player who wants to grow with the organization and who will enjoy working at a startup
