The Information seeks an AI columnist

The Information is the go-to source of in-depth reporting for the most influential leaders in technology and business. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Francisco, our original, high-quality journalism has the power to inform the most consequential decisions shaping our future, and we’ve built a community of 700,000 active readers who depend on us to do just that. We have a financially healthy business, plenty of capital, and big ambitions to grow our team and business.

About the role

Artificial intelligence shows every sign of becoming as disruptive to how we live as the smartphone or the web browser. But much of what’s being created is complicated and confusing, and we’re looking for someone eager to explain this technology and chronicle this wild new era.

You’ll write a column two or three times a month for The Information’s Weekend section about how people use AI in everyday life and explain the new ways they could be using it. We want this person to be to the AI age what Walt Mossberg was to a previous generation: a signature, authoritative voice. You should be comfortable immersing yourself in the latest forms of AI and eager to pick up the phone and talk to the person who created it—and the people using it. You will be someone who wants to demystify a frontier technology and can do so in sparkling copy. You’ll be an idea machine. And you should want to call out the best of the best while warning readers when you see something that’s not.

The ideal candidate is located in San Francisco. New York candidates will also be considered. We offer a flexible hybrid work model to provide a balance between in-office and remote work. To ensure effective collaboration and communication, employees are required to work in our San Francisco or New York offices three days a week.

Qualifications

  • A desire to be an authoritative voice on AI and a drive to build a following and audience for your work.
  • An eagerness to report on AI’s positives and the negatives and the skill to balance coverage between them.
  • A vision for what you’ll want to write about—and a collaborative attitude for honing the column’s direction as it evolves.

Why join us?

At The Information, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a team of passionate professionals, shaping the future of tech and business journalism. We’re committed to fostering a collaborative, inclusive environment where innovative ideas thrive. If you’re excited about the chance to make an impact with your marketing expertise and help grow a brand that’s setting the standard for quality journalism, we’d love to hear from you.

Salary range: $80,000 to $160,000 plus bonus and benefits.
