We are seeking an experienced Technology Reporter to join our dynamic editorial team. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the technology landscape, exceptional writing skills, experience covering tech news, and a track record of breaking significant tech stories.
We’re looking for someone who is excited to cover the latest major news in the technology field, whether developments in emerging technologies, the industry giants, policy developments, and more. You have fresh ideas for news, feature and enterprise stories, in areas like surveillance and privacy, civil liberties, equity and discrimination, and the social implications of new tech such as AI.
And you love variation. In the course of your work, you might cover the breaking news of Reddit’s IPO, appear on The Guardian’s daily podcast, write a feature on the revival of an icon of the American internet, or contribute to an end-of-year package on tech in 2024.
The position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and entails working West Coast hours.
Responsibilities:
- Research, report, and write compelling tech news stories.
- Balance new coverage with original features and analysis on technology-related topics.
- Stay ahead of industry trends and developments to identify and pitch timely and relevant story ideas.
- Develop and maintain a network of sources within the technology sector.
- Collaborate with editors and other reporters to ensure comprehensive and accurate coverage.
Skills and qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge of the technology industry.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Excellent news judgement and ability to generate exciting and original story ideas on the most urgent and consequential tech news topics.
- Commitment to editorial independence and understanding that good reporting will be both tough and fair in its coverage of the industry.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a technology reporter or similar role.
- Experience writing and editing technology coverage for a fast-paced digital news publication.
- Experience writing and editing stories in different formats and at various speeds, ranging from breaking news, to explainers, features and enterprise work.
- Extensive experience writing and editing technology coverage for a fast-paced digital news publication.
- Experience writing stories in different formats and at various speeds, ranging from breaking news, to explainers, features and enterprise work.
- Experience balancing both breaking news and long-term editorial goals.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
