STAT News seeks a DC reporter

STAT is looking for an enterprising, versatile, curious, and hard-charging reporter to join our award-winning Washington D.C. bureau at this unique moment in our country’s history, when an understanding of the issues that STAT covers in Washington is more relevant than ever.

This reporter will pursue ambitious and impactful stories about the way politics and advocacy shape health care. We’re looking for a reporter who can break news and deliver quick-turn analyses, and also conceive of and execute illuminating, provocative, and unexpected enterprise stories. Our Washington reporters make up a small but close-knit team that stands out for exclusives.

What You’ll Do

  • Deliver scoops and distinctive stories from the Washington health care ecosystem including the White House, Congress, key health agencies, and the advocacy groups that lobby them

  • Balance the demands of daily news coverage with longer, deeply reported features and other enterprise targets

  • Moderate and lead events and contribute to newsletters and podcasts

Who You Are

  • A journalist who’s covered politics, health care, or science (or all three!)

  • Have a demonstrated track record of delivering scoops and exclusives on a competitive beat

  • Be collaborative, flexible, and willing to innovate

  • Remain faithful to bedrock journalistic values and committed to excellence

We know that there are strong candidates who may not fit precisely into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

Compensation/Location

The minimum salary for this position is $75,000. We offer a competitive benefits package, including health insurance, a 401(k) plan, generous vacation, and more. We also have numerous wellness offerings, including free access to HeadSpace for all full-time employees. Parental leave is also offered.
