Star Tribune seeks a business editor

The Star Tribune is seeking an accomplished, motivated and versatile journalist and leader to shape and drive audience-centered journalism produced by our talented Business team, and to work with others across the organization and in the community to create the leading model for local news in America.

This is an opportunity for someone to boldly reinvent our journalism for digital readers in one of the most dynamic and diverse business communities in the country, and to create a truly exceptional, nationally distinct business report that compels readers to subscribe to the Star Tribune.

You must excel at all aspects of story development, from spot news to daily enterprise to projects, and will help your reporting teams develop and deliver ambitious, useful and distinctive journalism that has impact in Minnesota and beyond.

Just as important: You have a vision for how to make this journalism an indispensable part of our readers’ lives. You will constantly challenge yourself and your staff with a simple question: Is this something our readers would willingly pay for?  You will bring your own ideas to drive consumer revenue and will work closely with leaders across the company to identify, create and launch products, events and other initiatives that will strengthen the bond between the Star Tribune and its subscribers.

You are committed to listening to and experimenting with diverse ways to engage with our audiences. You will employ real-time metrics and audience strategies to coach your team on how to increase the reach, relevance and impact of the Star Tribune’s journalism. You will foster a culture of risk-taking, creating and changing beats and experimenting with different storytelling forms and mediums. You will be rigorous and disciplined in assessing approaches that have promise – and those that do not.

You are dedicated to working collaboratively across the newsroom and the company at Minneapolis headquarters. As a senior leader, you will help build and execute our company strategy to achieve subscriber growth. You will foster an inclusive work environment and strive to ensure that your teams and their coverage reflect the diversity of Minnesota.

You Will:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Editor, Managing Editors and other news leaders to determine daily, weekly, and ongoing coverage strategies across multiple platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with the Star Tribune’s Audience, Product, Consumer Growth and Revenue teams to ensure our journalism reaches its widest audience.
  • Engage with community leaders, citizens and subscribers at forums and other events, articulating how the Star Tribune lives its journalistic mission and values.
  • Demonstrate personal leadership skills with an emphasis on respectful inclusion while driving for excellence.
  • Adhere to best practices around audience analytics, search and discovery.
  • Ensure that editors on your team are working with reporters to develop and implement data- and audience-informed coverage plans for their topic areas.
  • Effectively recruit, hire and train for a broad range of skillsets.
  • Lead and deliver transformational edits as needed on major initiatives.
  • Enforce deadlines on stories from quick-turn to long-range.

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
  • Sharp editorial judgment and can work with reporters who have a wide range of experience — serving as a coach, manager and guide in a constantly changing news environment.
  • A proven record of accomplishment in a senior-level position leading teams to successful results.
  • Top-notch storytelling experience across a variety of mediums, and a demonstrated ability to produce journalism that affects change.
  • Fluency using 21st century digital tools, tracking and analyzing online audience trends and building strategies to engage readers.
  • Management skills that foster a creative and supportive culture.
  • Communication and collaboration skills to work across a matrixed organization.
  • Experience managing a budget, conducting timely performance reviews, and hiring.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, track budgets and multitask in a high-pressure environment.
