Sherwood Media seeks a tech writer

Sherwood Media

Sherwood Media is Robinhood’s new, independent media brand for news and information about the markets, economics, business, technology, and the culture of money.

The story of money is the story of culture, and Sherwood is the secret weapon for the next generation of investors. Our team is making financial news more accessible, entertaining, and relevant by improving the way it is curated, shared, and consumed. We are building on the success of Snacks — our flagship markets and business newsletter — which has one of the largest audiences in the country.

About the team + role

We are seeking a dynamic and savvy reporter to join our editorial team covering established and emerging tech and the companies behind those innovations. Coverage areas will include (but not be limited to) startups, FAANG, AI, EVs, VR, social networks, and generally the “business of tech.” The ideal candidate is a skilled journalist with a deep understanding of the tech industry, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts to a diverse audience. We are looking for a specialist to join the team, not a generalist. You should have an ability to break through the noise and a vision for improving the existing ways of coverage to better serve modern audiences. If you’re known for breaking original news, capturing emerging trends before other people see them, and getting voices in the space on the record saying surprising and illuminating things, we want to talk to you.

It is preferred that this role is located in one of the office locations listed on this job description which will align with our in-office working environment. This position is only eligible for remote work in limited geographies within the US where we do not have physical office locations. Please connect with your recruiter for more information regarding our in-office philosophy and expectations.

What you’ll do

  • As part of the Sherwood Media team, you’ll be on the pulse of the daily tech news cycle. You’ll work closely with editors and writers to pitch, develop, and refine stand-out technology / tech business stories.
  • Your core responsibility is developing and writing news stories, analysis, and commentary on tech, trends, and technology companies. Importantly, you’ll discern the essential developments that matter to Sherwood’s audience.
  • You’ll help pitch, research, and fact check story coverage.
  • We’ll lean on you to help share and execute experiments and initiatives, finding new, strategic ways to reach our audience with helpful, compelling coverage.
  • You’ll help ensure our news products span a balance of perspectives and topics, and uphold Sherwood’s editorial and ethics standards.
  • Here, you will have the opportunity to transform your career in a dynamic environment that supports excellence and autonomy.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent work experience in a newsroom setting
  • Previous experience (5+ years) covering news, working in, and reacting to breaking-news situations
  • Knowledge of other key editorial players in the landscape and the desire to hone Sherwood’s distinct voice
  • A love for news and keen editorial judgment. You’re eager to share what you know with a large audience, breaking down complex stories and shining a light on developments that make markets move.
  • Quick. Clear. Engaging. You’re able to break down complicated concepts and make them easy to understand and digestible for a broad audience
  • You’re not satisfied with a summary — you can find “the story within a story,” and connect events to the bigger picture
  • You have an ownership mentality. You’re constantly looking for the next story, and are driven to hone your craft and find better ways to serve our audience
  • You prioritize quality and pay strong attention to detail, factual precision, and nuance
  • Flexibility and willingness to collaborate cross-functionally, experiment, and develop new tools
