Reuters seeks an ag reporter in Winnipeg

Reuters seeks a driven reporter to join its Canada team to cover agriculture. It is a crucial time for agriculture commodities coverage as a fall in prices of the main grains hurts farmers worldwide. The right candidate will be as comfortable writing on price movements in canola, livestock, wheat and corn as producing scoops and investigative pieces on agriculture, farming and food supplies in Canada and around the world. You will be skilled at making sources with commodities traders and have sharp ideas on how agriculture intersects with trade, labor, climate change and other beats.

The job, based in Winnipeg, involves some travel in Canada and requires the winning candidate to work closely with the Chicago and global agriculture team and help guide the coverage of quarterly earnings of listed ag companies. The reporter should be comfortable working with visuals and graphics to help bring stories alive. Reuters requires all reporters to pitch original story ideas and to incorporate new reporting techniques and technology into their work.

The position is part of the wider Canada team and the reporter will be expected to occasionally work on top Canadian domestic stories, that could range from natural disasters, to covering strikes, and to other general news stories.

About the Role

As an Agriculture Reporter, you will:

  • Write daily market reports covering canola, and also be required to join the rotation for our main U.S. cash grain and livestock market reports.
  • Closely monitor crop condition reports, grain and oilseed sales and processing, and livestock markets.
  • Develop and maintain sources to break news ahead of the competition.
  • Develop, pitch and deliver initiative stories.
  • Use multimedia as appropriate to tell stories- graphics, pictures and TV.
  • Work together with large global teams to break news and undertake reporting projects.

About You

You would be a good candidate for the role of Agriculture Reporter if your background includes:

  • A minimum of four years of experience in journalism.
  • Experience covering markets, commodities trading, and the agriculture industry.
  • A proven track record in delivering exclusives, and extensive experience breaking news and handling big breaking stories in real time.
  • Experience in developing deep sources, pitching, reporting and writing long-form stories.
  • Strong writing and organizational skills.
  • The ability to clearly explain complex subjects to a wide audience as well as to the professional reader.
  • Proven ability to work closely and collaboratively as part of a diverse team spanning regions.
