Reuters seeks a senior commodities correspondent in Moscow

August 12, 2023

Posted by Chris Roush

If you live and breathe commodities news, we’d like to speak you.

We are searching for a correspondent to lead coverage of Russian metals, grains and other commodities.

Russia is a commodities titan: the world’s biggest exporter of wheat, pig iron and agricultural fertilizer, the biggest diamond producer, the second-largest platinum producer, the third-largest gold, nickel, titanium and aluminum producer, the fifth-largest steel producer and a major player in everything from uranium and sugar and to coal and timber.

But Russia and its biggest companies are facing the severest sanctions the West has ever imposed. Russia’s economy has shown remarkable resilience and is deepening its economic partnership with China, India and Iran.

This is one of the most demanding and exhilarating roles in Reuters: At a time of momentous change, you will write the Russian commodities story for the world, explaining the big picture while ensuring Reuters provides the swiftest and most insightful coverage. You will be fluent in Russian and English, have superior writing skills on everything from snaps to deeper stories and manage the most talented team of reporters in Russia.

Based in Moscow, you will be at ease covering breaking news from Nornickel or explaining the wheat harvest and the Black Sea Grain Initiative to a distant audience. We are looking for someone who can deliver major world scoops and drive a pipeline of deeper stories that tell the tension, drama and personalities of one of the most unique commodities producers on earth.

About the Role

As senior commodities correspondent, you will:

  • Lead a team of talented commodities reporters in Moscow
  • Deliver the fastest and most insightful coverage of commodities in Russia
  • Work with the bureau chief and editors to deliver winning coverage
  • Cut through the jargon and bring out the personalities who own and trade the commodities
  • Deliver a stream of exclusives on commodities
  • Uphold the Trust Principles and ethical standards of Reuters in every respect
  • Ensure commodities data is covered with accuracy, speed and style

About You

You will likely have:

  • The empathy and experience to lead a team
  • Deep knowledge of Russia
  • Extensive commodities experience and contacts
  • A willingness to work in Moscow
  • Fluent Russian and English
  • An ability to work calmly under pressure
  • Very strong writing skills

NB: To be considered for this opportunity please ensure that you submit BOTH a CV and Cover Letter. Your Cover Letter should be addressed to “Whom It May Concern” and should detail your motivations for applying to the role.
