Reuters seeks a co-bureau chief for Spain and Portugal

Reuters is looking for an experienced editorial leader with strong video and pictures background to jointly lead our news operations in Spain and Portugal.

Iberia is home to the European Union’s fourth largest economy and is on the frontline of a changing climate in Europe, with wildfires and extreme heat. It’s home to three of the euro zone’s biggest banks, the world’s largest clothing retailer and one of Europe’s most important tourism industries. You will be also coordinating visuals sports coverage in a region which is home to some of the most important soccer teams in the world.

You will be a talented and confident manager who can lead a large team of journalists – from every discipline – across the region. You will have a track record anticipating and driving complex news operations in a fast-paced environment, to win timings, beat our competitors and give our clients the news they need, including deep human storytelling. We want someone who can handle breaking news as well as pitching stories that go beyond the headlines and help explain to a global audience the political, socio-economic, environmental, and cultural developments in Iberia and why they matter.

As co-bureau chief, you will ensure that our multiple formats work in lockstep when it comes to story conceptualization, planning and breaking news coverage. You will work closely with your co-bureau chief to run the office, manage staff, and set up the strategic goals for the newsroom as well liaising with other editors and bureaus to coordinate wider coverage. You will also work closely with video journalists, photographers and producers to ensure live and edited coverage is sharp, memorable and resonates with clients and our growing consumer audience.

This is a full-time role that demands flexibility and readiness to work weekend shifts. It will report to the Europe Editor for Video with a dotted line to the Europe News Editor.

As our trusted Iberia Co-Bureau Chief, you will:

  • Be experienced in managing teams
  • Have excellent news judgment and ability to prioritise news coverage
  • Have an eager instinct and creativity to always be first in breaking news situations
  • Have a keen eye for visual storytelling
  • React quickly to breaking news offering live cover and still photos as appropriate
  • Produce tight, well-written accurate news copy to deadline
  • Pitch story ideas which also translate well for digital and broadcast platforms
  • Work as part of a multimedia team that covers events, starting from the planning phase through to field work
  • Uphold Reuters Trust Principles of independence, integrity and freedom from bias

You should apply if you have:

  • At least 10 years of solid editorial experience in either a broadcast, agency, or digital newsroom
  • Excellent news judgment, with a clear vision of what makes a compelling multiplatform story
  • Advanced skills as a newsroom leader, able to coordinate large teams of journalists on the ground
  • Wide-ranging experience setting up and coordinating complex live photo and video multi-camera operations
  • Thorough understanding of the latest digital video technologies for filming, editing, transmitting and sharing video
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build contacts and relationships quickly
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • Excellent Spanish and English – written and oral, working proficiency in Portuguese a plus
