Rest of World seeks a South Asia reporter

November 29, 2023

Posted by Chris Roush

Rest of Worldis an international nonprofit newsroom that challenges expectations about whose experiences with technology matter. We connect dots across a rapidly evolving digital world, through on-the-ground reporting in places typically overlooked and underestimated.

Since launching in 2020, we’ve published stories from nearly 100 countries outside the West. Our work explores the spaces where tech, business, culture, and human experience collide, through compelling storytelling and fresh, innovative design. Our reporting has won recognition in the U.S. and internationally, and our work has prompted companies and policymakers to take action.

Our journalism ranges from deep authoritative reporting to highlighting surprising online cultural phenomena. In 2024, we’re focused on covering stories about local tech champions, the rise of AI and electric vehicles, the influence of China and Silicon Valley outside their home regions, and trends in the creator economy.

Rest of World is looking for an energetic, experienced, and enterprising reporter with a sophisticated understanding of the effects of technology across South Asia to join our team. The ideal candidate is someone who has experience covering technology and business in India, is open to experimenting with story formats, and will jump at the opportunity to write about a range of topics — from the role of AI in politics to the state of startup ecosystems to how tech is transforming a country.

The reporter can be based in any major Indian city, including Bengaluru, New Delhi or Mumbai. The role will report to the South Asia editor.

Responsibilities

  • Pitching, reporting, and writing stories about the tech ecosystem in India and other key cities in South Asia
  • Collaborating with freelance reporters and photographers in countries across South Asia for stories and projects
  • Researching and reporting on South Asian tech and business, including but not limited to general research briefs, chasing down story leads and tips, and writing your own stories for publication
  • Providing material for the publication’s newsletters, events, and special projects

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience in journalism
  • Experience reporting on international issues, business or tech coverage
  • You must be comfortable with data as well as basic economic and financial concepts
  • An understanding of what audiences are looking for in digital and social media technology and business coverage
  • A serious desire to bring new information into the world and an obsession with telling great stories in different formats
  • Strong research skills, especially across different regions, cultures, and languages
  • A strong work ethic, comfort with startup conditions, and must be a motivated self-starter
  • Collaborative, enjoys working in teams with different disciplines and learning from others

This is a contract position, and the final compensation will be based on the candidate’s work experience and location.

To apply, please send a CV/resumé and a short cover letter to jobs@restofworld.org with “South Asia reporter” in the subject line. In your cover letter, please share three stories you’ve reported on in the past year, describe how you sourced each story, and tell us what you’d do differently this time. Also, in 30-40 words, share an idea for a story you’d like to write for Rest of World.

The deadline for applications is December 15, 2023.
