Rest of World is looking for a new Features Editorto oversee our longform stories. The features editor will work with in-house and freelance reporters from around the world to find, assign, and edit Rest of World’s most ambitious work.

Experience in crafting compelling narrative features, identifying colorful characters, knowing how to secure access, navigating sensitive subject matter, and the ability to structure a story for impact is a must. A track record of shepherding investigative features is a plus. The features editor will have an acute curiosity about technology, social media platforms, startup ecosystems, artificial intelligence, the gig economy, and the people involved.

The role

As Rest of World’s features editor, you’ll be expected to commission and edit longform stories with a publishing cadence of two stories per month. These stories will span our coverage areas in terms of both geography and topics. Recent examples include a story about culture clash at a Taiwanese chip maker in the U.S., a global look at the chilling effect of facial recognition on protest, a data-driven feature exploring the impact of pollution on gig workers, and an investigation into how India’s ruling party uses WhatsApp ahead of the elections.

Our longform stories are among our most ambitious work and require creative ideas and sharp editing: We expect them to resonate with readers globally, demonstrate real impact, and win top journalism awards.

The features editor will be expected to keep a roster of top-level writers from around the world, and to maintain a steady flow of your own ideas for stories. You must be adept at supporting reporters with different levels of experience, handling sensitive reporting issues, and structuring stories into compelling narratives.

While you’ll need to be confident working independently, the features editor also collaborates with the rest of the team, helping to coordinate with the art, product, and production teams, as well as regional editors, to produce the best version of every story.

This is a full-time role and will report to the executive editor. The location is flexible though you should have prior authorization for work in the country you expect to be based in.

Who we’re looking for

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have 5+ years experience in editing, including significant experience editing longform narrative journalism
  • Have experience editing tech or business stories, or a demonstrated interest in these beats
  • Have experience or interest in editing investigative stories
  • Be a motivated self-starter, brimming with ideas for stories and ready to offer solutions to challenges
  • Bring and continue to develop a roster of writers to contribute to Rest of World
  • Be eager to collaborate with people across teams and ‘pitch in’ as required in a startup environment
  • Feel motivated by Rest of World’s mission and their role in furthering the publication’s goals
