The New York Times is looking for a creative and collaborative journalist to cover Apple – the tech giant that is a nation-state unto its own and that is synonymous with smartphones and other consumer electronics, tech services and apps – as the company faces increasing challenges to its power and questions about its future directions.

You will jump on news, lead investigative pieces, produce scoops, and write features of the characters, issues and technologies at Apple. You would also help to shape the beat, using Apple as a jumping-off point to delve into a variety of topics.

You will have a record of distinguished beat coverage, including a proven ability to break news, spot trends, develop sources and produce deeply reported features. You are adept at writing in a variety of formats, able to juggle deadline demands with long-term efforts, and both comfortable and creative with a full set of digital and multimedia tools.

This Guild position will be based in San Francisco.

Responsibilities:

  • You will identify Apple news, scoops and issues to cover. Think big and think creatively about how to frame stories about the company. Source deeply on Apple and related topics.
  • You will use Apple to jump into other issues in Silicon Valley, as well as broader technological trends, culture stories, profiles and more.
  • You will quickly deliver first-rate news stories on deadline when events warrant and pitch different kinds of stories, including profiles, investigations, visual pieces, audio and video.
  • You will deliver clean, fast, accurate and engaging copy at a high level.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to a Business Editor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience as a technology beat reporter
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how the tech industry operates
  • Digital-media experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced news environment
  • A willingness to collaborate, and the ability to partner with colleagues across the Business desk and newsroom
  • Experience in large newsrooms writing or editing breaking news

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
