NerdWallet seeks a copy editor

NerdWallet is looking for an experienced copy editor with an entrepreneurial spirit. To be a successful copy editor at NerdWallet, you must:

  • Edit consistently at a high level, demonstrating expertise at not only grammar and style but also at story organization and reader experience.
  • Go beyond a traditional copy-editing role, helping to uplevel co-workers and taking on projects that benefit the entire content team.
  • Be passionate about helping readers and ensuring that NerdWallet’s articles are consistently engaging, clear and actionable.
  • Be comfortable with change.

That’s part of what it takes to thrive at NerdWallet, where we guide consumers on a range of financial topics, including credit cards, banking, personal loans, student loans, mortgages, insurance and investing.

Our content team is 130+ strong and includes writers and editors with experience from Bloomberg, the Los Angeles Times, MSN, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. We also have staff members who have spent years as successful freelancers or in fields outside journalism.

What we have in common: We take initiative. We think strategically. We problem-solve effectively. We’re adaptable. We’re highly collaborative.

Where you can make an impact:

  • Copy-edit and write headlines at a consistently high level.
  • Advocate for consumers by editing for clarity and accuracy.
  • Go beyond surfacing teamwide problems to offer expertise, conceiving of solutions and helping to implement them.
  • Look for opportunities to extend your influence beyond the copy desk, such as through projects where desk participation can make a difference.
  • Give constructive feedback to writers, assigning editors, and fellow copy editors.
  • Understand when to escalate issues and when to solve them at the individual or team level.
  • Be a strong communicator who truly enjoys helping everyone improve.
  • Recognize when elements of an article seem out of alignment with a good user experience and recommend solutions.

You are:

  • Adaptable and eager to grow, including working toward roles of greater responsibility on the copy desk or elsewhere on the editorial team.
  • An expert editor and editing coach.
  • Able to handle the logistics and demands of large projects.
  • Good at making prioritization decisions, spending an appropriate amount of time on each task.
  • Excellent at prioritization and handling multiple tasks at once.
  • Resourceful and self-directed. You can tackle anything from copy-editing assignments to projects with minimal direction, and you always deliver polished work.

Your experience:

We recognize not everyone will meet all of these requirements. If you meet most of the criteria below and you’re excited about the opportunity and willing to learn, we’d love to hear from you.

  • 3 to 5+ years of copy-editing experience for consumer-facing publications.

Where:

  • This role will be based in San Francisco, CA or remote (based in the U.S.).
  • We believe great work can be done anywhere. No matter where you are based, NerdWallet offers benefits and perks to support the physical, financial, and emotional well being of you and your family.
