Modern Retail seeks a reporter

Modern Retail, Digiday Media’s retail-focused digital publication, is looking for an enterprising journalist to chronicle the reinvention of the retail industry and the ways technology has upended traditional retail business models.

They will help shape Modern Retail’s coverage by identifying emerging industry trends, keeping tabs on noteworthy digitally native startups and reporting on the evolving strategies of retail behemoths like Walmart. This position requires at least two years of past journalism experience.

Responsibilities include:
– Write three to four reported stories every week about the transformation of retail that either break news or provide exclusive analysis
– Write recurring feature-length stories
– Build a growing rolodex of insider sources
– Participate and help lead Modern Retail editorial events
– Be a front-facing member of the Modern Retail team
– Help shape Modern Retail’s coverage

Requirements:
– Two to five years of professional business journalism and writing experience.
– A willingness to pick up the phone and cultivate a network of sources in the industry
– An interest in retail, e-commerce and the trends that drive this industry

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
