The beat involves coverage of intellectual property regulation in the EU. MLex seeks to get ahead of the procedural story through deep-dive analyses of legislation to anticipate where regulatory problems may lie. It’s a high-pressure beat in which there’s an expectation you’ll break market-moving news while offering the forward-looking analysis that helps inform decision-makers.
MLex is a real-time newswire and the successful candidate will be expected to turn around urgent copy quickly. It is critical that the successful candidate can successful spot a story that will appeal to MLex’s broad-but-demanding readership. We also publish in-depth reporting and commentary, and the Senior IP Correspondent will be expected to identify risks posed by legislation ahead of our competitors and use this expertise to write in-depth, big impact investigations and commentary pieces.
The Senior IP Correspondent will help set the direction for MLex’s coverage of intellectual property in Europe, while working closely with colleagues in other bureaux and the broader intellectual property team. Part of this role includes mentoring younger colleagues and providing feedback on how to improve their work.
The successful candidate must be able to write clearly and concisely in impeccable English. Fluent French and/or German is also a requirement for this role to cover court cases at the Unified Patent Court. Any other additional European language, particularly Dutch, would be a distinct advantage.
The successful candidate will be expected to work in our Brussels office at least three days a week under our post-Covid hybrid working policy; the other two days may be worked from home (accurate as of May 2024, subject to revision).
What we are looking for:
At least five years of reporting experience, including at least three years covering EU intellectual property news
Track record of breaking exclusive news and writing poignant analysis
Writing with speed and flair in both newswire and commentary formats
Deep knowledge of EU regulatory environment
Demonstrated news judgment
Broad network of sources across EU institutions, industry and law firms
Social skills to work with and mentor reporters
Fluent in English and French and/or German
Skills in other European languages a distinct advantage, particularly Dutch
