The Jacksonville Daily Record, a business-oriented news organization in Northeast Florida, is seeking a journalist to cover city government and related public agencies.
The Daily Record prides itself on being the must-read publication in print and online for Jacksonville’s corporate and commercial leadership.
In our government coverage, we leave politics and partisanship to others while we look for stories that affect our region’s businesses and economy, such as economic development initiatives, major building projects, commerce-related policy changes and more.
Our newsroom has built a reputation for being accurate, reliable and fast, consistently breaking stories before other media.
We’re looking for a journalist who likes to work in the classic style – in person, on the scene and in the middle of the action.
At the Daily Record, you’ll work for a family-owned publication with an expanding newsroom and a staff that has won numerous awards for its reporting and design.
In Jacksonville, you’ll find an NFL city with miles of Atlantic beaches, billions of dollars in developments underway, historic neighborhoods and a low cost of living compared to other Florida metros.
The job
This reporter will cover city and regional government, focusing on how it intersects with business in Northeast Florida.
Examples of some of the stories you will be covering:
- The city’s dealings with the Jacksonville Jaguars and more than $1 billion in projects for planned for Downtown, including a new University of Florida graduate campus.
- Multimillion-dollar incentives deals for industry and other development.
- Growth, development and other business-related legislation as it moves through city government.
- Reporting on the $1.92 billion city budget with millions assigned for capital improvement projects.
The job doesn’t end there.
We are an experienced, small and agile team. There is no job too large or small for any of us. The more skills you can bring, or be willing to learn, the better.
Everyone on staff contributes by reporting, writing stories, editing copy, proofing pages, taking photos, researching records and posting stories online and on social media. You may also represent the paper at events and network in the area.
For example, you may be asked to rewrite a news release, take a photo or contribute to a special section outside of your usual beat. This job is for someone ready to do anything that helps the team and keeps us a step ahead of our competition.
Work environment
The news team works both at home and in the office. The government meetings you will want to attend can be in the evenings.
