This is a newly created position within our news department, which is growing. While many newspapers have shrunk considerably over the past year, HBJ is coming out of the pandemic with an expanded newsroom.
We also aren’t corporately-owned. We are a small privately-held company with owners who are investing and growing our brand.
Commercial real estate and economic development are our most important coverage areas and we are expanding our efforts to get into local communities.
The staff writer should be an enterprising journalist who can develop sources within town and city governments who are responsible for economic development so we can report on the latest developments, trends and new projects. We are also looking for a reporter who knows their way around public records.
The main job duties include writing breaking news stories for the web as well as occasionally more in-depth trend stories for print. The staff writer position will report on cities and towns both in Greater Hartford as well as Greater New Haven, for the Hartford Business Journal and the affiliated New Haven Biz publication.
We don’t want to just cover the news. We want to be breaking stories, outpacing the competition and leading the conversation.
We are offering a competitive salary, full health benefits and 401(k). We are looking for candidates with a minimum 3 to 5 years of experience. Business journalism experience is a plus, but an experienced town news reporter can also be a good fit.
If you’re interested in joining a hardworking and dynamic newsroom, send your resumes to Hartford Business Journal Editor Greg Bordonaro at gbordonaro@HartfordBusiness.com and Jill Coran at jcoran@nebusinessmedia.com.
