The Globe and Mail is seeking an ambitious, dynamic reporter to cover government and fiscal policy in Ottawa for the Report on Business.
To be successful, you will have a firm grip on economics, a keen eye for policy and a drive to reveal how business constituencies interact with the federal government and vice versa. You will understand politics and the day-to-day rhythms of Ottawa, but cover them through a lens that is ruthlessly economic. The ideal candidate will connect policymaking to the people, companies and regions that are affected by government decisions.
This is an opportunity to join a collaborative team of reporters who cover economics and business, working out of The Globe’s Ottawa bureau, with whom you will work closely. You will be expected to file a variety of stories regularly: source-based scoops; breaking and scheduled news; enterprise reporting; and features that bring economic and fiscal policy to life for our audience.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Cover breaking and live economic and fiscal policy news from Ottawa.
- Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas
- Develop and maintain sources in government and business
- Write clearly and concisely on deadline
- Work with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich The Globe’s coverage
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least five years’ experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
- Solid news judgment
- Ability to translate fiscal and economic policy into engaging prose for The Globe’s audience
- Familiarity with political reporting and economics
APPLICATION: Please submit a cover letter with your resume.
SALARY: This position is classified as a Reporter in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
