FT’s Fund Fire seeks a managing editor

Drives direction of publication, including how beats are structured, coaching of reporters and continually adjusting content to meet readers’ needs. Manages and coaches a team of approximately 10 reporters to produce the most important information (news, features, research, etc.) to a readership of professionals. Conducts performance reviews of staff. Recruits talent. Oversees all aspects of the day-to-day publication cycle, from story generation to editing for style and accuracy. Leads edit meetings, helps reporters generate story ideas and guide story selection across all formats (video, visualizations, stories, webcast, etc.)

In addition to daily FundFire content, shepherd the weekly FundFire Alts issue, and occasional thematic newsletters. Ensures adherence to Money-Media style and quality standards. Develops knowledge of the space we cover and what’s important and valuable to readers. Gathers reader feedback, assesses it and acts, as necessary. Monitors online statistics and readership to gauge editorial
quality.

Exhibits entrepreneurialism. Coordinates with GME and others in relevant departments in presenting or advancing ideas for product development or features; retiring ideas or features that do not work of have outlived their utility. On occasion, moderates webcasts or panels at events run by Money-Media or the Financial Times’ events group. Shares knowledge and expertise where necessary with events group.
Oversees and manages team budget. Represents editorial team internally and externally. Attends industry conferences and meet with industry executives, as appropriate.

May telecommute within New York, NY area.

Required Skills / Experience

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field and 5 years of experience in the job offered or in a reporting/journalist-related occupation
  • 2 years of editing experience
  • Generating and pitching ideas on investment management
  • Using knowledge of asset management products, including separate accounts, SMAs, CIT, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds
  • Using knowledge of pensions and retirement plans, and how the differences impact asset managers
  • Understanding of AI in asset management
  • Commanding the investment management landscape, including knowledge of institutional asset management products, such as separate accounts, SMAs, CIT, mutual funds
  • Alternative asset management universe, including hedge funds, private equity and real estate sectors;
  • Fund accounting basics
  • Thinking critically about developing content in multiple formats, including data visualization, video, investigatory pieces and hard news
  • Solid understanding and training others on regulatory filings including SEC documents, DOL pension documents, lawsuits and other court filings; Establishing a source network; and Building content/products for a B2B audience

Further information

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $131,144 to $135,000; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. The disclosed range estimate is for our NYC office and has not been adjusted for other locations.
