We have an exciting opportunity in our New York office for an assistant US managing editor, a key editorial leadership role in a market where our expansion plans are at the top of the FT’s priority list. This role will be charged with deputizing Peter Spiegel, our US Managing Editor, on both personnel and editorial issues. As a result, the successful candidate will have a keen interest in the people side of editorial operations, helping to identify and recruit potential hires as well as managing relationships with external partners to continue diversification of the US newsroom.
The new assistant US managing editor will work alongside Peter Spiegel and David Crow (US News Editor), and will be pivotal in executing our US growth plan initiatives, which includes liaising with colleagues in the FT’s commercial and technology departments on specific projects. Among the initiatives that will be part of the assistant US managing editor’s portfolio will be partnerships with social media groups like LinkedIn, and groups like the National Association of Black Journalists and National Association of Hispanic Journalists, coordinating on joint projects with Nikkei, and helping steer cross-FT efforts to better engage with students and academia.

Key responsibilities
- Work with US managing editor and US news editor to execute growth plans
- Collaborate with other departments within the FT, including FT Live, communications, product and key commercial teams to coordinate US growth efforts
- Manage relationships with the NABJ, NAHJ and other organisations, working to diversify newsrooms in the US
- Help develop a recruitment pipeline for New York, Washington and San Francisco bureaus
- Ensure existing US network is supported by London and FT’s human resources department
- Liaise with managing editor’s office in London on personnel and budgeting decisions
Who we are looking for
You will have a passion for editorial management, helping to guide and support other journalists in their efforts to make the FT’s news operations in the US as competitive as possible. Project management skills would be hugely beneficial, with multiple initiatives underway as part of the FT’s US growth plans. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills as well as an understanding of the challenges involved in a fast-paced daily news organization.
