Entrepreneur seeks a reporter

Entrepreneur is seeking a smart, scrappy and enterprising reporter to cover business, tech and personal finance news.

This role calls for a journalist who will not hesitate to cultivate sourcing, jump on a call for comment or break scoops. This person will cover everything from the existential threats of AI to the latest shakeup on Wall Street and everything in between–all through the lens of entrepreneurship. This reporter will help readers cut through the noise and tell essential stories about the people and companies that shape our world.

We’re looking for a versatile and digital-savvy reporter who has a deep understanding of how to generate readership and is able to turn convoluted concepts into accessible and digestible stories.

You will:

  • Pitch and produce 2-3 quick-turn reported stories or analysis of the news of the day.
  • Also work on longer term, deeply reported enterprise features on your beat.
  • Develop a repository of sources who can help you break news and provide original insight into the top business stories of the day.
  • Write under tight deadlines, craft digital-friendly headlines and optimize your stories for Search.
  • Pitch longer-lead features consistently and during our monthly pitch meetings.

You have:

  • 3+ years of reporting and writing experience for a major publication. Experience covering business or tech news is a plus but not a requirement.
  • Ability to produce clean, compelling copy on deadline.
  • A capacity to be nimble and enterprising, can pivot on a dime and has an insatiable appetite for captivating online audiences with clicky and compelling story concepts.
  • A collaborative spirit and positive attitude.
  • A digital-first mindset and a deep understanding of audience development practices such as SEO, headline writing and pitching story angles that resonate with digital audiences.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools like Parse.ly, Google Analytics, Google Trends, Crowdtangle a plus.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
