The Canadian Press is looking for a business reporter/editor to join its Toronto bureau, which forms the hub of a team located around the country. The successful candidate will be an experienced, dedicated and passionate journalist who is able to juggle a variety of assignments and produce them in a timely manner.
They will have a proven ability to find original, captivating stories across multiple sectors (financial markets, corporate news, retail trends, real estate, etc.) that help set the business news agenda. They will also possess the strong writing and broadcast storytelling skills needed to explain complex financial and economic topics and why they matter.
Editing experience and financial expertise are considered assets, and the candidate must be flexible about working hours to meet needs of a 24/7 wire service. This includes occasional weekend shifts.
General Responsibilities:
- Write, edit and gather multimedia content for CP’s various services (print, digital, broadcast and video)
- Generate and develop compelling national business stories on a daily basis, with a strong focus on consumer interest and personal finance stories
- Write business-oriented feature and analysis pieces
- Monitor business news developments, ensuring we have the latest news on the wire
- Cover quarterly earnings reports from major publicly traded companies
- Reporting on stock market performance
- Develop reliable business sources in key companies and industries
- Uncover exclusive stories that put CP ahead of the pack
Skills and Experience Required:
- Five years of newsroom experience, background in business journalism preferred
- Solid understanding of stock markets, financial statements and corporate documents
- Ability to work under extreme deadline pressure
- Demonstrated experience using different platforms, including broadcast, video and multimedia
- Ability to disseminate complex financial information to a general audience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to edit and improve colleagues’ work on short notice
- Demonstrated self-starter
- Familiarity with CP Stylebook and Caps and Spelling
- Successful completion of the Canadian Securities Course or other financial analysis course considered an asset.
